Community and Lazy Brains

I live in the Pacific Northwest, well-known for rain and days of “if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute.” Today, for example, in the last two hours, it has rained, been windy, and is now sunny with big, white fluffy clouds scuttering across the sky. It is a good reminder that there is nothing so constant as change.

And boy, have we seen a lot of change lately. Even for someone who has been on the solar coaster a few times, the times we’re living in feels extra “coaster-y”.

I have felt heartbreak watching layoff announcements from DoE, NREL, and so many others, along with private organizations impacted by cancelled grants and loans. So many smart, dedicated people suddenly having to find new career paths. Our national community is poorer for it.

What gives me hope are the people in this industry. People sharing job posts on social to boost the signal to those looking. Heartfelt messages of support. Offers to help how they can. I have said it before, and I’ll say it again – the incredible, brilliant, kind, thoughtful people make this industry so much better.

As a gen-xer brought up on radical independence, the importance of community is something I have had to learn. It doesn’t matter that there were 140,000 people at Intersolar in Munich last week. It’s still a community. 50,000 attendees at RE+? Yup, community.

I feel heartened by the small and large kindnesses I see in this community every day.

Use Our Lazy Brains to Your Advantage in Clean Energy Brand Content

Do you remember the Shel Silverstein poem, “Lazy Jane”?

Lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy Jane.
She wants a drink of water so she waits and waits and waits and waits and waits for it to rain.

Turns out, she was onto something. Human brains are lazy, always looking for ways to be more efficient. It’s why we form habits – our brains can “group” separate actions together to form one action.

Once we understand this and apply a few simple principles, we can take advantage of lazy brains to present clean energy brand content in a way that gets it noticed and read.
From understanding what draws our attention first, to how to group information to reduce cognitive overload, read on for quick and easy tips to help your clean energy content stand out.
