Power of Visual Storytelling

I originally intended to write a different intro to this newsletter. However, the changing winds for the clean energy transition occurring this week has left me dismayed and discouraged. Based on what I’ve been reading, I am not the only one.

A colleague and I have recently been talking about the power of “and”. The ability to hold space for two ideas is incredibly powerful. I am discouraged by what I’m witnessing on a national level … and … I am hopeful. I am hopeful because of you. Colleagues who know the importance of the energy transition, who understand and act on the need to shift our ways of doing.

I see the steps back the U.S. is making in energy … and … in 2024 solar overtook coal generation in the EU. I see the declaration in the U.S. of an “energy emergency” to push forward with more oil and gas production, and counters that “… the global oil market is already oversupplied.” I expect that won’t end well for those looking to profit.

Last month, I wrote that I thought 2025 would be a pivotal year. Little did I know just how pivotal. The story our industry tells the world is so much more vital in the face of disinformation and opposition. We have the opportunity to change the narrative. We can keep playing catch up and working to counter disinformation. Or we can laugh at the absurdity of the disinformation, move on, and focus our message on the specifics of how much better clean energy is for our communities.

I hope everyone reading this takes a moment to breathe and recenter before plunging forward into the rest of the year. In my 20+ years in the solar industry, I have seen what an incredible community this is. Together we can keep the energy transition moving forward.

Don’t hesitate to reach out – whether it’s to discuss working together or you need encouragement in the face of stressful news. Or anything in between.

Visual Storytelling for Clean Energy Brands

Once upon a time… stories were the primary means we used to make sense of the world and convey important information.

Stories give us a framework in which we wrap larger concepts and understand them. And visual storytelling uses imagery in order to convey narratives. Visual storytelling can take the form of photos, illustrations, video, animation, infographics, charts/graphs, and experiential design or architecture.

While we all participate in visual storytelling every day – either as the narrator or the recipient – understanding how to craft effective visuals to tell your organization’s story is key to ensuring you are making the most of the organization’s investment in creative.

Clean energy companies have incredible stories to tell. Read on to learn how to use visual storytelling to its best advantage.
