FAQs

What’s different about branding and marketing for solar companies?
When thinking about branding and marketing for a solar company, understanding your customers is key. While this can be said of any industry, in solar, it is doubly so. Your audience probably has more energy subject matter expertise than most. You are walking a fine line between providing expertise and diving into the jargon weeds. Knowing your audience is important to know where that fine line is.
For visual identities – logos, etc. – tired, often used tropes should be avoided. Sun icons, a light bulb, and the power/on/off symbol have been used a lot. Consider different visuals when designing a logo to help your organization stand out.
What questions should I ask when evaluating branding agencies for my solar company?
Meet the team you will actually be working with to ensure you can work well together.
Consider what experience they have working with solar companies. Will you end up spending a lot of time training them on the basics and/or nuances of solar? There will always be time spent learning more about your company, but do you have the time to teach about solar too?
Generally, does the agency provide both brand strategy and brand creative? Or just one? What is their hand-off process when the engagement is complete?
Finally, consider timelines. Would you like to launch a brand at RE+, Intersolar, or ACP? Ask if the agency you’re considering can meet your timeline.
Should my solar company use brand or performance marketing?
Brand marketing creates brand awareness, influences the public’s perception of the brand, and builds brand loyalty.
Performance marketing, on the other hand, has a goal of generating an immediate action from your audience, with an ultimate outcome of warm leads for the sales team.
Both brand marketing and performance marketing work hand-in-hand. It’s important to understand your goals, your customers, and your positioning when diving into either brand marketing or performance marketing. Solar companies should employ a mix of both for the best long-term results.
